History of Silver City Baptist Church
Pastor and Cherri Cooper planted their first church in Bourne, MA. When the church became self-supporting, they turned the work over to another pastor. They then began seeking God’s direction as to where they should plant the next church. After much prayer and searching out different areas of Massachusetts, God gave them a burden for the city of Taunton.
The first services of Silver City Baptist Church were on October 17, 1993 at the Leddy School, 36 Second St. in Taunton. The work began many months before with door-to-door visitation followed by a phone campaign, contact was made with over 6,000 families announcing the beginning of a new church. The theme used in our mailings was “You are loved at Silver City Baptist Church”. It has been the emphasis ever since to be sure that those who visit our church get a warm and loving welcome.
The church met in the Leddy school for 14 years. During those years God blessed with many people coming to know the Lord as their personal Savior, being baptized, and added to the church. Others who were already saved were also brought into the church. Others who were saved but unchurched were added.
In 2004, the church bought 6 acres of land and remodeled a vacant house and installed a septic system for the house and a church of 250. Shortly after the purchase the church also relocated to a rented building on Route 44 near the new property. Even though the church continued to grow, we saw the cost of new construction grow due to increased regulations and building costs.
In 2012, we began negotiating to purchase our present building. It took one and a half years of negotiations and a lot of prayer! On October 17, 2013, our 20th Anniversary, we closed on the purchase of our present property. The goal has always been to be a church that both shows the love of God to people and preaches the truth of God’s Word without compromise.
The church voted in Aug. 2024 to bring Bro. Devin Bard on staff as a co-pastor to help Pastor Cooper with the pastoral ministry and to help with the search for the future pastor of the church. Bro. Bard has had experience recently helping a church in Maine to go through the process of finding a new pastor. The congregation is praying for the Lord’s direction as we search for God’s will.
